For full details on available subjects, please download the Highers Programme (PDF)
Attendance
Each subject is delivered over two teaching sessions per week for daytime classes. The variety of options on offer results in each student having an individual timetable. Classification of student status (part-time or full-time)
is determined by choice of subjects and individual circumstances.NB: Additionally some subject areas within the Highers Programme are delivered in the evening; one three hour teaching session per week.
Structure
The majority of subjects at each level have three internal assessments from the National Assessment Bank (NABs) and one final external examination undertaken in May/June each year. To achieve a pass at Advanced Higher, Higher or Intermediate level, all elements have to be undertaken successfully. To prepare for the final external examination, most subjects incorporate an internal preliminary examination which usually occurs in March.
Entry Requirements
Highers Subjects: a pass at Intermediate 2 or Standard Grade 1 or 2 in the same subject is usually required. However, for social science subjects, for example Psychology, Sociology and History no previous attainment in the area is required. In these circumstances performance in English is the main consideration – Standard Grade 1 or 2 or Intermediate 2 ‘C’ pass is required. For Higher English and Languages, an Intermediate 2 ‘B’ pass may be required. Exceptions can be made for mature students across all subjects.
Advanced Higher Subjects:
A 'B' pass at Higher is the minimum normal requirement.
Interview
Subject combinations and the most appropriate level of study will be agreed at interview. If you are awaiting an exam result, we will offer a provisional acceptance based on a pass at the required level being achieved. If your results do not meet the entry requirement, we will offer you a place in another subject, or the same subject at a different level.
