Cost of Living

You may find that living in the UK is more expensive than the cost of living in your own country. When you plan your studies in the UK it is important that you budget for the whole year, tuition fees and living expenses included. The British Council estimates that, not including course fees, the average student needs around £650-700 per month to cover accommodation, food, clothing and basic needs. This amount varies from student to student and depends on their standard of living.

The majority of students will be permitted to work whilst studying - check your student visa for details.

If you do wish to work, you will be permitted to work for no more than 20 hours per week during term times. The average wage is around £5 per hour, therefore you can expect to earn up to around £100 per week or £400 per month - although you should remember that you will have to pay tax and national insurance on this.

Please note - you should not expect to rely on wages earned from part time work to support yourself.

To get a student visa you must be able to prove that you can support yourself without having to work.
