New Estate Groundbreaking Ceremony

Friday 1st February 2008 marked the start of work on the £35m Langside College with the new college expected to be complete in April 2009.

65 external partners attended the Ground Breaking Ceremony to witness the Principal, Mr Graeme Hyslop, behind the wheel of a JCB marking the start of building work by lifting the first bucket of soil from the site of the new 'built for purpose' college for the southside of Glasgow.

The occasion was further commemorated with the planting of a Silver Birch tree by the Langside College Chair of the Board of Management, Brian Keegan. This tree is the first of six trees to be planted within the new Langside College campus; each if which will represent a decade of learning at the college.

The project will be funded mainly by the Scottish Funding Council and will provide a modern and dynamic learning space. The new facility will be built on the footprint of the present College on Prospecthill Road from which Langside College has served the local community for the past 60 years.

The new development is welcomed by both students and staff who recognise the need for facilities which reflect developments in education and provide a technologically well equipped learning space that ensures student success.

Opening onto Battlefield Road to improve access and re-enforce the inclusive ethos of the college, the new facility will comprise of a three storey main teaching block, indoor and outdoor multi-purpose sports facilities, a theatre arts and conference centre and retail units. All of which will be open to the public.

Site contractors, Balfour Beattie are now underway with Phase 1 of the construction which is expected to finish in April 2009 and will cover construction of the main teaching block. Phase 2 will run from April 2009 until April 2010 and will consist of the new sports facilities and the Theatre Arts Conference Centre. The final phase will be completed in October 2010 to provide outdoor sports facilities, car parking and landscaping.

The whole process will be undertaken with minimal disruption to teaching and Langside College will maintain their high educational standards.
