Pollockshaws ALN Project
(Pollokshaws Parish Church)

FIRE SAFETY Reviewed August 2007

Purpose

  1. To ensure the speedy but safety evacuation of all staff, learners and visitors to a safe assembly point.
  2. To ensure that Pollokshaws Parish Church, as an outreach venue used by Langside College staff and students, complies with responsibilities imposed by legislation.
  3. To prevent fire starting, and the spread of any fire from its source as far as possible.

Responsibilities

1. Sounding the Alarm - the person who discovers the fire should activate the alarm at the nearest 'break glass' point.

2. Calling 999 - only staff should call the Fire and Rescue Services. The person discovering the fire should inform a staff member when the alarm is sounded, giving the location of the fire.

3.

Ensuring Learner Evacuation - Tutors should ensure immediate and total evacuation.

4. Checking Total Evacuation of a Designated Area - The Fire Warden will check that the building has been fully evacuated.

5.

All tutors must accompany learners to the assembly point whereupon a register should be taken to check that all are safely accounted for. Staff not teaching at the time of an evacuation will also be responsible for ensuring that visitors make a speedy but safe path to the assembly point.

6. The Fire Warden should ensure safe access for the Fire Brigade.

7. Only the Fire Warden is permitted to remain in the vicinity of the building. All other persons MUST make their way to the designated assembly point without delay.

8.

The Fire Warden in consultation with the Chief Fire Officer in attendance will give the ALL CLEAR. No-one should re-enter any building until the ALL CLEAR has been announced.

PROCEDURE

1
On Discovering a Fire:

(a) Raise the alarm by operating the nearest Fire Alarm Break Glass Point.

(b) If safe to do so, (a personal judgment), tackle the outbreak with a fire extinguisher, having first safely evacuated learners from the building. If not, close the door and leave the building by the nearest route. Report to the assembly point.

2
On Hearing the Fire Alarm

2.1

Evacuate the building quickly, but safely, by the nearest exit point, following marked routes.

2.2 Go to the fire assembly point. Visitors should be accompanied to the main assembly point with the other evacuated staff and learners.

2.3 Do NOT delay by taking coats or personal belongings. Do NOT go back to collect anything.

2.4 Close doors and windows if this does not significantly delay departure.

2.5 Check Fire Doors are closed behind you as you leave the building.

2.6 If the Fire Marshal is not present, their duties should be assumed by a member of staff free to do so.

2.7 Do NOT re-enter the building until the "all clear" has been sounded.

FIRE SAFETY FOR LEARNERS

1. Don't Panic.

2. Don't run.

3. Don't take your things with you.

4.

Don't go to any other room.

5.

Go out the nearest fire exit.

6.

Go to the front of the church near Homestart.

7.

 Wait.

8.

Don't go in to the church. Wait for the tutor to tell you it's OK.
