The flexible Learning centre offers a wide range of online courses from the Skillnet (LearnDirect Scotland) suites of courses. These courses cover a number of subjects including:

Skillnet

We have created two new online courses to help support Langside College students through their studies: ICT LITE and Research & Study Skills. Both of these courses are FREE of charge to Langside College staff and students and can be accessed via the College's virtual learning environment, Blackboard. A Blackboard account can be set up for on request at the Flexible Learning Centre in the LITEhouse.

ICT LITE

This course, called ICT LITE, has been written by LITEhouse staff to help both staff and students in the College improve their ICT skills. The course consists of 6 modules as follows:

Module 1: PC Basics
What is a computer?
Getting to grips with the keyboard & mouse
Understanding Windows
Working with files

Module 2: Word Processing
Introduction to Microsoft Word
Working with text: how to select, delete, copy, cut, paste & format text
Saving documents / Page setup / Printing options

Module 3: Spreadsheets & Presentations
Introduction to Microsoft Excel

Using Chart Wizard
Introduction to Microsoft Powerpoint
Creating presentations using Powerpoint

Module 4: Email
Registering & managing a web-based email account
Sending & receiving email

Module 5: Online Resources
Browser basics
Searching the Web
Evaluating & referencing web sites
ATHENS & subscription online resources
Using the online library catalogue

Module 6: VLE (Blackboard)
Blackboard basics

Each module is relatively short and written in plain English with lots of illustrations to give a simple step-by-step guide to common computing tasks faced by staff and students alike. Each module, except Module 6, is made up of 2- 5 sections with a worksheet at the end of each section to test the knowledge or skills which have been gained.

Research & Study Skills

This Research and Study Skills course has been created to help you improve your research, study and employability skills. The course consists of 9 main sections:

  • Study plans
  • Study skills
  • Searching for information
  • Using the online library catalogue
  • Searching electronic resources
  • Referencing and bibliographies
  • Conducting surveys
  • Presentation skills
  • Job hunting skills
