Former Langside College Student Follows Footsteps of Hollywood Stars
Former Acting & Performace student Kat Murphy was named top of her class of nearly 200 at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts in New York. At a glamorous awards ceremony, Kat was presented with her graduation prize from one of the head lecturers, Jim DeMonic, who has been Robert De Niro's voice coach for the last 10 years.
The Academy is the toughest acting academy in the world, and past graduates include Lauren Bacall, Kirk Douglas, Kim Cattrall, Paul Rudd, Rosalind Russell and Adrien Brody, to name but a few. Kat spent two years studying at Langside College, and starred in Glasgow-based film 'NEDS' before moving to the Big Apple to continue her training. She said,
"I had no idea how hard we would have to work! The Academy demands total commitment. I arrived on January 3 last year and worked solidly until August, then I had just six days rest before we were thrown into the second term which ran through until April this year."
Kat will soon be treading the boards, as she and 20 of her most talented class colleagues were singled out to join the Academy Company. Being a part of the Company will see Kat take on leading roles in professional plays off-Broadway for the next year, and she's only looking forward:
"Graduating from the Academy has been the most incredible experience of my life, but there is no time to sit back and reflect. My attention is now fully on the Company and the experiences that lie ahead in the next year."
Best of luck to Kat from all of us at Langside College. Remember us when you're famous! |

HNC Childcare Student Wins 'Glasgow's Star Turn'
Congratulations from all of us at Langside College, to Glasgow's Star Turn winner Elissa Crorken. Elissa has just completed an HNC in Childcare at Langside College, but has a strong passion for singing in her spare time. At the age of 10, Elissa entered her first talent competition in St Paul's Primary in Tollcross. "I just love singing and music", she says, "I get a buzz from it. I like to sing Motown and soul stuff but I love Beyonce!".
Glasgow's Star Turn is a new competition launched by the Evening Times to find the most talented people in Glasgow and the West of Scotland. 11 talented acts made it through to the final of the competition, held at the Old Fruitmarket on July 30th, and were judged by a celebrity panel of four, including Michelle McManus and Sanjeev Kholi. Elissa fought off competition from dance group 'The Dancebeat Pirates', aspiring singer Gaby Humphries, and rock 'n' roll guitarist Brandon Brown, amoung others, to win the £1000 prize.
